Diseases of the female reproductive system in sheep and goats


1. Uterine inflammation (Metritis / Endometritis / Pyometra)

 Cause: Bacteria (E. coli, Brucella, Trueperella), difficult births, placenta retained in the tissues.

Symptoms: Inactivity, fever, vaginal discharge, repeated delay in pregnancy.

Treatment/Prevention: Antibiotics, supportive care, maintaining hygiene during childbirth and preventing difficult births.


2. Oophoritis / Cystic Ovaries

Cause: Hormonal imbalance, stress, poor nutrition.

Symptoms: Infertility, changes in the reproductive cycle.

Treatment/Prevention: Hormonal therapy as recommended by a veterinarian, stress prevention, proper nutrition.


3. Salpingitis

Cause: Bacterial infection, usually following uterine inflammation.

Symptoms: Infertility, chronic inflammation.

Treatment/Prevention: Antibiotics, concurrent treatment with uterine inflammation.


4. Mastitis

Cause: Bacteria (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus).

Symptoms: Swelling, redness, pain, purulent milk or pus.

Treatment/Prevention: Antibiotics, supportive care, maintaining hygiene.


5. Brucellosis (Brucella melitensis)

Cause: Brucella melitensis bacteria.

Symptoms: Infertility, abortions, premature births.

Treatment/prevention: Vaccination, isolation of sick animals, antibiotics as recommended by a veterinarian.


6. Chlamydiosis (Chlamydophila abortus)

Cause: Chlamydophila abortus bacteria.

Symptoms: Abortions, mainly in late pregnancy.

Treatment/prevention: Vaccination, prevention of infection, isolation of patients.


7. Toxoplasmosis (Toxoplasma gondii)

Cause: Toxoplasma gondii parasite.

Symptoms: Abortions, decreased reproductive capacity.

Treatment/Prevention: Prevention by controlling cats in the environment, disinfection and maintenance, vaccination in some locations.
